Convert Wells Fargo Statements to Excel and CSV

A Wells Fargo checking statement lists each transaction with a short date such as 1/3, an optional check number, a description, and separate Deposits/Additions and Withdrawals/Subtractions columns. An ending daily balance is printed on the last transaction of each day. The sign of an amount comes only from the column it sits in, and the year appears in the page header rather than on each row.

General PDF converters tend to merge the two amount columns, drop the year, or return nothing at all from a scanned copy. Statements to Sheets reads the columns by position, so each amount gets the correct sign, and it handles scans.

Upload your Wells Fargo statement to see the first rows before you pay. The first 50 transactions are free.

Why a Wells Fargo statement is hard to convert

The year is missing from the rows. Wells Fargo prints it once in the page header, so a converter that reads only the rows returns dates like 1/3. Excel then guesses the year, and a statement that crosses from December into January can end up with a December row in the wrong year.

The direction of the money is in the column, not in the number. A deposit and a withdrawal are both printed as plain amounts, and only their position tells you which is which. Text-based converters that flatten each line see a single number and have to guess.

Many people only have a scan. A statement mailed on paper and scanned, or photographed on a phone, has no text to copy. It has to be read with OCR first, and a page scanned sideways has to be turned upright before the reading starts.

How a Wells Fargo transaction history is laid out

Columns as printed on the statement:

Date | Check Number | Description | Deposits/Additions | Withdrawals/Subtractions | Ending daily balance

  • Dates are printed as month and day with no year, and one-digit months and days are not padded (1/3, 12/30).
  • A description can wrap onto a second line, for example a card number and date below a purchase.
  • The ending daily balance appears only on the last transaction of each day.

How we convert it

  • Each amount takes its sign from the column it is in: deposits are positive and withdrawals are negative.
  • One-digit and two-digit dates are accepted, and the year comes from the statement header. December rows on a statement dated early in the year get the previous year.
  • The second line of a wrapped description is not counted as a separate transaction.
  • Scanned pages are read with OCR, and pages scanned sideways or upside down are turned upright first.
  • The Balance column is filled only on the rows where Wells Fargo prints a daily balance. We never calculate or guess a balance.

Every conversion also checks each page against the page image, and lines that continue a wrapped description are not counted as extra transactions.

The result is a CSV with Date, Description and Amount columns (plus Balance when the statement has one) that opens in Excel and imports into Google Sheets and QuickBooks. You pay per transaction, not per page. See plans and pricing.

What people do with the file

Bookkeeping catch-up. If you have a year of Wells Fargo statements and need them in QuickBooks, Xero or a spreadsheet, you can upload all twelve in one conversion and get a date, description and signed amount for every transaction.

Tax preparation. A signed amount column lets you total deposits and withdrawals by month with a single formula, and filter by description to find a specific payee or deduction.

Reconciliation. Because the daily balance is kept on the rows that print one, you can compare your sheet with the statement's ending balance without retyping anything.

Good to know

  • Scanned statements can contain OCR digit errors. Compare totals with the statement.
  • Wells Fargo credit card and business statements use different layouts and are not covered by this page.

Questions

Does it work on a scanned Wells Fargo statement?

Yes. Scanned pages are read with OCR, and sideways or upside-down pages are turned upright first. Scans can produce digit errors, so check the totals against your statement.

How does it know which amounts are deposits and which are withdrawals?

By the column the amount is in. Deposits/Additions are positive and Withdrawals/Subtractions are negative.

Will I get a running balance column?

Yes, when the statement prints one. Wells Fargo prints the ending daily balance on the last transaction of each day, so only those rows carry a balance.

Why do the dates in my output include a year when the statement does not?

Wells Fargo prints the year once in the page header. We read it from there and add it to every row.
