Convert Chase Statements to Excel and CSV

A Chase checking or savings statement lists every transaction in a single TRANSACTION DETAIL table with a date, a description, an amount and a running balance. Withdrawals and fees are printed as negative amounts. Dates are printed as month and day, and the year is only in the statement header.

Statements to Sheets reads that table and returns one row per transaction with a full date, the description, the signed amount and the balance.

Upload your Chase statement to see the first rows before you pay. The first 50 transactions are free.

Why a Chase statement is hard to convert

Two numbers end every line. The amount and the running balance sit side by side at the end of each row. A converter that takes the last number on the line returns the balance as the transaction amount, which is wrong on every row.

The year is only in the header. Each row shows a month and a day. A spreadsheet that receives 01/03 treats it as a date in the current year, which is wrong for a statement from a prior year.

The page has a lot that is not a transaction. Beginning and ending balances, page numbers and summary lines all sit in the same table area. They have to be left out or the row count and the totals are off.

How a Chase transaction detail list is laid out

Columns as printed on the statement:

Date | Description | Amount | Balance

  • Dates are printed as MM/DD with no year.
  • Withdrawals, fees and card purchases carry a minus sign; deposits do not.
  • Every row has a running balance.

How we convert it

  • The amount is the first of the two numbers at the end of the row, and the second is kept as the Balance column.
  • Amounts keep the sign printed on the statement, so withdrawals are negative and deposits are positive.
  • The year is taken from the statement header and added to every date.
  • Beginning balance, ending balance, page numbers, headers and footers are not turned into transactions.

Every conversion also checks each page against the page image, and lines that continue a wrapped description are not counted as extra transactions.

The result is a CSV with Date, Description and Amount columns (plus Balance when the statement has one) that opens in Excel and imports into Google Sheets and QuickBooks. You pay per transaction, not per page. See plans and pricing.

What people do with the file

Monthly bookkeeping. Convert each month's statement and paste the rows into your ledger sheet. The signed amounts add up directly, with no cleanup of minus signs.

Expense reports and tax prep. With one row per transaction and a full date, you can sort by date, filter by merchant name and total a category with a pivot table.

Checking your own numbers. The Balance column lets you confirm that a sum of the amounts from the opening balance lands on the next row's balance.

Good to know

  • The current Chase statement layout is covered. Older Chase layouts may differ.
  • Chase credit card statements use a different layout and are not covered by this page.

Questions

Are withdrawals negative in the output?

Yes. The amounts keep the sign printed on the statement, so withdrawals and fees are negative and deposits are positive.

Does it keep the running balance?

Yes. When the statement prints a balance on each row, it is added as a Balance column. If a statement has no balance column, none is added.

Does the date include the year?

Yes. Chase prints only the month and day on each row, so the year is taken from the statement header.

Can I convert several months at once?

Yes. You can upload more than one statement in the same conversion.
